Empowering Sustainability: Casa Do Mel by Estudio Flume

Estudio Flume has unveiled its latest achievement: Casa Do Mel, a beekeeper’s workshop nestled in the heart of the Brazilian Amazonia. Commissioned by the Associação dos Apicultores de Canaã dos Carajás, this project is not merely a construction endeavor but a pivotal step in a larger socioeconomic and environmental strategy.

Fostering Local Sustainability

Situated in Canaã dos Carajás, Pará Estate, Brazil, Casa Do Mel serves as a workspace dedicated to processing honey collected by a co-operative of 53 local rural producers. Beyond its functional aspect, the workshop embodies a vision of self-sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Innovative Design Solutions

The topography of the site presented a unique challenge, with a significant seven-meter elevation difference. Rather than resorting to costly ground-works, Estudio Flume opted for an elevated concrete slab supported by pilotis. This decision not only proved cost-effective but also facilitated natural ventilation throughout the building.

Climate-Responsive Architecture

Conscious of the local climate, Casa Do Mel’s orientation was meticulously planned to optimize thermal comfort and natural lighting. Permanent premises, including honey processing rooms, were strategically positioned to capture the gentle morning sunlight, enhancing productivity and worker well-being.

Sustainable Building Strategies

The facade of Casa Do Mel showcases a blend of functionality and sustainability. Constructed with concrete blocks and insect mesh, it promotes cross ventilation while regulating internal light levels—a crucial factor in maintaining optimal working conditions.

Holistic Environmental Solutions

In addition to its architectural features, Casa Do Mel incorporates various sustainable strategies. A circle of banana trees serves as a natural water treatment system, preventing soil contamination. Furthermore, a bio-digester efficiently processes organic waste to produce fertilizer and compost, while rainwater harvesting further reduces environmental impact.

Conclusion

Casa Do Mel stands as a testament to the transformative power of architecture when coupled with social and environmental consciousness. By embracing innovation and sustainability, Estudio Flume has not only created a functional workspace but has also paved the way for a brighter, more sustainable future in the heart of the Amazonia.
