Developed by Public City Architecture, this icy playground is a testament to the city’s commitment to accessible seasonal recreation.

Accessible Thrills for All

Located in St. Vital Park, Manitoboggan Slide is Winnipeg’s inaugural universally-accessible toboggan structure. It epitomizes the city’s dedication to inclusive social infrastructure. The project boasts two toboggan runs, a lookout tower, and a warming hut that serves as both a shelter and a picnic spot. A meandering ramp winds through the forest, leading to a wheelchair-friendly toboggan launch and viewing deck.

Inclusive Design Features

While the slide itself isn’t wheelchair-accessible, the design incorporates features for easy transfer to a toboggan at the launch. Additionally, a ramp replaces stairs, enabling tobogganers of all abilities to reach the top. Paralympic medalist Billy Bridges lauded the Slide, remarking on its transformative impact on outdoor winter activities.

Regional Inspiration and Cozy Amenities

The tower’s design pays homage to Manitoba’s heritage, featuring a graphic inspired by the iconic Mary Maxim sweater pattern. Below, the warming shelter welcomes visitors with its inviting red hue and cozy ambiance, complete with heaters for chilly days. Large pivot doors facilitate social gatherings and family picnics, fostering a sense of community amidst the snow.

Sustainable Design Practices

In line with environmental stewardship, the ramp’s steel structure is carefully designed to preserve the surrounding urban forest. A blend of steel grates and wooden decks enhances the journey up the ramp, offering diverse views and sounds. Moreover, the warming hut incorporates reclaimed beams and columns from a nearby picnic shelter, minimizing waste and embodying sustainable principles.
