Revitalizing Heritage: Idea Exchange Old Post Office Library

The Idea Exchange Old Post Office Library, crafted by RDHA, stands as Canada’s first “bookless” library devoted to Makerspaces. Nestled in South Cambridge, this innovative space offers residents access to various learning and creative zones, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. Situated along the Grand River, the project breathes new life into a historical landmark – the 1885 masonry post office – which had fallen into disrepair. A modern addition, a 9,000-square-foot transparent pavilion, envelops the original structure, extending over the water and inviting passersby to explore its vibrant interior.

Harmonizing Tradition and Modernity

RDHA’s architectural marvel seamlessly integrates old and new elements, embodying intelligence and practicality. Through meticulous design and the use of off-the-shelf materials, the project achieves sophisticated forms while maximizing utility and economy. The transition from post office to digital hub symbolizes advancements in communication technologies, reflecting the evolution of the Cambridge library system into the Idea Exchange.

Inviting Interactions

Upon entering the library, visitors are greeted by a glass box entrance leading to a captivating feature stair. Glass walls provide glimpses of the restored masonry, while guiding guests into the contemporary pavilion that extends over the river. The space, adorned with seating and breathtaking views, offers a serene setting for reading and socializing. Rhythmic window openings lead to a fully-equipped Reading Room Cafe, seamlessly blending the old and new.

Thoughtful Design Details

Carefully curated design details enhance the library’s functionality and aesthetics. Custom ceramic frit patterns on glazing reduce solar heat gain, while perforated drywall ceilings absorb sound, creating a harmonious environment. The lower level boasts creative studio spaces, including a black box theatre and film recording suites, catering to diverse interests. The children’s Discovery Centre on the second level offers interactive learning experiences amidst panoramic views of the river.

Embracing Innovation

At the attic level, an all-white Makerspace equipped with state-of-the-art tools and technology encourages creativity and exploration. Visitors can marvel at the clock tower through a glass ceiling, bridging the past with the present. As a nod to the future, the architects clad the cantilever with aluminum panels, reflecting the building’s surroundings and anticipating future developments along the river.

A Blend of Past and Present

The Idea Exchange Old Post Office Library stands as a testament to the rich architectural and library heritage of Cambridge. By juxtaposing historical elements with contemporary design, RDHA celebrates the value of merging tradition with innovation. While the library may be bookless, it serves as a dynamic hub for learning, creativity, and community engagement, honoring the legacy of its historic predecessor in a modern context.
