The Samsun Multipurpose Hall stands as a testament to the legacy of the demolished Samsun Hotel’s iconic ballroom. With its rich history of hosting various events, including wedding ceremonies, the former ballroom was deeply ingrained in the urban memory of Samsun. The project aimed to preserve this cultural heritage while reimagining its space for contemporary needs. Situated between the Samsun Ataturk Cultural Center and the ‘İlkadım’ Monument in the city center, the hall occupies a prominent location along the green coastline, amidst other social and cultural buildings.
Architectural Design
A key aspect of the design strategy was to maintain a visual connection between the coastline and the city. To achieve this, the main hall’s facades, oriented parallel to the coastline, were designed to be as transparent as possible. This transparency allows events inside the hall to be visible from the outside, enhancing engagement with the surrounding environment. The use of a steel structure was selected to meet the functional requirements of the hall, while the architectural expression primarily focuses on showcasing the structural system.
Unique Features
Surrounding the building, a metal cage system adds character to the facades, creating an irregular rhythm that complements the building’s functions. The multipurpose hall comprises two main halls spanning 600 square meters each, along with two smaller meeting rooms. A grand two-story foyer welcomes guests with a sculptural staircase, setting the tone for the multifunctional spaces within.
Conclusion
The Samsun Multipurpose Hall stands as a symbol of urban revitalization, preserving the cultural heritage of the demolished Samsun Hotel’s ballroom while providing a contemporary venue for various events. By seamlessly integrating modern design elements with historical significance, the hall embodies the spirit of progress while honoring the past. Its strategic location along the coastline ensures that it remains an integral part of Samsun’s cultural landscape, fostering community engagement and enriching the urban experience for generations to come.
