Design Engine Architects has brought to fruition an ambitious redevelopment project at Feldon Valley, marking the completion of the final phase with the unveiling of a new boutique hotel and four woodland lodges. Nestled in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Feldon Valley has evolved from its origins in the early 1990s, when local visionaries transformed agricultural land into a golf club.
A Vision for Sustainability
Under new ownership by 360 Partners, a comprehensive strategy was devised to enhance the club’s long-term viability, centered around golf, community, and nature. Following extensive course improvements, Design Engine was enlisted in 2014 to conceptualize a modern hotel, woodland lodges, a greenkeepers’ complex, and a revitalized clubhouse. Planning consent was secured in 2016, paving the way for construction to commence in 2017.
Architectural Harmony with Nature
Design Engine’s scheme prioritized harmony with the natural landscape, ensuring minimal disruption to the site. The project encompasses four distinct components that form a cohesive architectural ensemble:
- Renovation and expansion of the existing clubhouse, featuring redesigned interiors and expanded outdoor terraces to maximize the club’s scenic locale.
- Construction of a boutique hotel with an L-shaped, two-story layout centered around tranquil courtyard lawns.
- Creation of four single-story woodland lodges nestled within the adjacent copse, offering serene accommodations for up to 60 guests.
- Development of a purpose-built greenkeeping facility, facilitating the establishment of an ‘Ecology Island’ dedicated to biodiversity and sustainable food production.
Sympathetic Design Integration
A shared palette of natural materials, carefully selected to harmonize with the Cotswolds AONB, imbues the project with a sense of place and identity. Design Engine’s multidisciplinary approach, encompassing master planning, architecture, interior design, and wayfinding, ensured a cohesive vision that celebrates Feldon Valley’s unique setting. Richard Rose-Casemore, Founding Director of Design Engine, expressed satisfaction with the project’s outcome, emphasizing the positive reception from stakeholders and guests as a testament to its success.
In essence, the redevelopment of Feldon Valley exemplifies a holistic approach to architectural design, where functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic sensitivity converge to create a harmonious retreat amidst the natural splendor of the Cotswolds.
