Shenzhen Shajing, with its geographic advantage, has seen significant development in the low-end manufacturing industry over the past few decades. However, this rapid industrialization has come at a cost, leading to the destruction of wetlands, farmland, and the overall suburban chaos. The project aims to address these issues by reimagining public spaces and promoting green humanities in the community.
Creating a Dynamic Public Space
The primary goal of the project is to provide a vibrant public space catering to workers, residents, teachers, students, and plant enthusiasts alike. Through experiential activities, the traditional planting culture of Shajing is revitalized, serving as a platform for community engagement and interaction.
Innovative Design Solutions
The original site layout featured an outdoor parking lot adjacent to the courtyard. To optimize space utilization and enhance spatial quality, a large landscaped terrace was constructed over the parking lot. This terrace seamlessly extends the courtyard, creating a multi-level public space system. Concrete planting troughs scattered across the terrace allow people to cultivate various crops and shrubs, adding to the visual appeal of the landscape.
The Planting Pavilion
Located in the northeast corner of the terrace, the planting pavilion serves as a hub for plant enthusiasts to gather and share knowledge. The pavilion features a public exhibition space on the first floor and a dedicated planting and training area on the second floor. A striking green vegetation wall showcases diverse plant species, while the open layout encourages communication and interaction among visitors.
Architectural Features
The design incorporates cantilevered staircases and hanging floors, lending the building a sense of lightness and elegance. Two entrances with varying levels establish a seamless connection between the terrace, interior space, and courtyard, enhancing accessibility and flow.
