Snapdeal, India’s third-largest e-commerce platform, has announced the successful testing of robots for e-commerce deliveries. Partnering with autonomous mobility startup Ottonomy IO, Snapdeal aims to introduce contactless and sanitized package deliveries using robots.
Testing Process and Technology
During the trial run conducted in Delhi NCR, robots were stationed at the entrances of residential societies. Delivery agents placed parcels inside compartments within the robots, which then utilized the societies’ maps to navigate and deliver the goods directly to customers’ doorsteps. Notably, these robots are equipped with ultraviolet lighting to disinfect packages while en route to the delivery location.
Future-Oriented Investments
Snapdeal is heavily investing in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to enhance its capabilities for future operations. The company envisions delivery robots playing a crucial role in e-commerce logistics, particularly in large townships, institutional campuses, and managed residential environments. Contactless delivery through robotic vehicles aligns with Snapdeal’s vision of creating a safer and more convenient shopping experience for consumers.
Industry Trends and Global Perspectives
Snapdeal’s initiative coincides with similar endeavors in the industry, where companies like Zomato, Swiggy, and Dunzo are exploring drone deliveries. In June, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) granted permission for testing beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drones for deliveries. Internationally, global e-commerce giant Amazon has introduced the Amazon Scout team, dedicated to developing autonomous delivery systems. These robots, akin to those by Ottonomy IO, are designed to navigate sidewalks and fulfill parcel deliveries.
Challenges and Considerations
While the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the demand for contactless deliveries, implementing robot-led deliveries in India requires significant infrastructural and policy reforms. Overhauling existing infrastructure and formulating robust regulatory frameworks are essential steps for the widespread adoption of robot delivery systems in the country.
