Elizabeth Warren Calls for Congressional Hearing on Student Loan Company’s Performance

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren is urging the CEO of MOHELA, a major student-loan servicer, to testify before Congress next month to address concerns over the company’s handling of borrowers’ debt cancellation and monthly bills.

Warren’s Letter to MOHELA CEO

In a letter addressed to Scott Giles, the CEO of MOHELA, Warren expressed her intent to hold a hearing before the Senate banking committee on April 10. The hearing, titled “MOHELA’s Performance as a Student Loan Servicer,” aims to scrutinize MOHELA’s conduct since the resumption of loan repayments and its administration of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

MOHELA’s Troubled Track Record

MOHELA faced repercussions from the Education Department in October for failing to meet its contractual obligations. The department withheld over $7 million in payments from MOHELA due to delays in sending billing statements to borrowers. Additionally, the company faced legal action from two borrowers who accused MOHELA of hindering their access to loan forgiveness and compelling them to make unjustified payments.

Warren’s Critique of MOHELA

In her letter, Warren accused MOHELA of exacerbating borrowers’ challenges by mismanaging the transition to repayment following the pandemic-induced hiatus on payments and interest. She emphasized MOHELA’s alleged obstruction of public servants’ eligibility for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Call for Accountability

Warren’s invitation for Giles to testify is seen as an opportunity for MOHELA to provide clarification on its role as a student loan servicer amidst significant changes in the federal loan program. However, MOHELA has yet to respond to Warren’s request for comment.

Ongoing Scrutiny and Confusion Among Borrowers

Warren’s initiative adds to the ongoing scrutiny faced by MOHELA and other federal servicers. The Education Department has penalized multiple servicers for billing statement delays, reflecting broader concerns about the confusion surrounding borrowers’ accounts, particularly regarding the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Conclusion

As borrowers navigate the complexities of loan repayment and forgiveness programs, Warren’s call for accountability underscores the importance of ensuring transparency and efficiency in student loan servicing. The upcoming congressional hearing will provide a platform to address these issues and seek solutions to alleviate borrowers’ challenges in managing their student debt.
