Majority of Biden’s 2020 Backers Question His Age for Presidency, Poll Reveals

As President Joe Biden gears up for a challenging reelection campaign, a significant portion of his 2020 supporters now harbor doubts about his ability to effectively serve as president due to his age, according to the latest New York Times/Siena College poll.

Shifting Perspectives on Biden’s Age

In the 2020 Democratic primaries, Biden’s extensive experience in the Senate and as vice president was seen as a valuable asset, reassuring voters who prioritized stability. Despite being 77 years old at the time, many viewed Biden as a seasoned leader capable of navigating the complexities of the Oval Office.

However, as Biden, now 81, faces reelection, a majority of likely voters, including a significant portion of his 2020 supporters, express concerns about his age. According to the survey, 71% of likely voters believe Biden is too old to effectively serve as president, with 59% of his 2020 backers sharing this sentiment.

Biden’s Supporters’ Concerns

The poll highlights a notable shift in perception among Biden’s supporters. While 53% of Democratic respondents expressed doubts about Biden’s age, indicating a divide within the party, the majority of those who backed him in 2020 now question his ability to serve effectively in the White House.

A Comparative Analysis

Comparatively, 41% of likely voters in the poll expressed concerns about the age of former President Donald Trump, who was 77 at the time of the survey. However, the disparity in sentiments regarding Biden and Trump’s age underscores a looming issue as the general election approaches.

Challenges and Criticisms

Biden’s presidency has faced challenges, including scrutiny over his handling of classified materials, with a February special-counsel report describing his memory as “hazy” and “poor.” To assuage concerns among Democratic base voters, calls have been made for Biden to increase his public appearances and campaign activities.

The Haley Factor and Campaign Response

Meanwhile, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley has emerged as a contender within the GOP, positioning herself as a representative of a new generation of leadership. Despite Biden’s challenges, his campaign remains confident, dismissing polling concerns and emphasizing their strong campaign strategy.

In a statement, the Biden campaign communications director underscored their focus on running a robust campaign, highlighting past electoral successes as indicative of their resilience amidst political challenges.
